Smith's heroics with the TSYJO or the SNJO hardly need further lauding in this modest corner of Jazzwise, but Effervescence is further proof, if proof were needed, of Scottish jazz's rude health. Effervescence has a rich blend of classic ensemble material – Woody Herman's tasty ‘Apple Honey’ – mixed with contemporary but still swinging songs – a Florian Ross arrangement of Corea's ‘Humpty Dumpty with Pete Johnstone to the fore on keys – and, most exciting of all, material from the band itself in the form of Sean Gibbs’ ‘Tam O’ Shanter’, rich with a rock swagger. It's too easy to praise youth for its energy and cocksure attitude while sliding over the subtle autonomy that Smith has instilled in his charges: true, it's the ensemble playing that kicks throughout, (check out the velocitudinous ‘Things to Come’ with Gibbs undaunted by the Dizzy part), but the likes of Michael Butcher on ‘Nefertiti’ reveal a more reflective quality too.
