It came as something of surprise that after an impressive trilogy of albums in the trio format, when his compositional and expressive piano playing found something fresh and original to say in one of the oldest instrumental combinations in jazz, that Gustavsen was willing to give up the potential the group offered in favour of a new combination. Especially surprising was the inclusion of the more declamatory tenor saxophone into his intimate musical world. Thus Restored, Returned with Brunborg and the consummate Mats Eilertsen on bass, was not so much what it was, but what it wasn't, a well rounded trio statement of the sort we had come to expect from Gustavsen. Live performance by the quartet served to reinforce this feeling, and this, their second album together, does reawaken these feelings, although the group has developed a more integrated feel and awareness, one to the other, of their role in the quartet setting and in Gustavsen's 11 compositions. While Gustavsen makes this combination tick through his choice of material, there is not the same rounded feel he achieved with his trio, and despite fine performances on ‘Playing’, the title track and ‘Circling’, it is impossible not to feel the warmth and subtlety Gustavsen displays here is not best focussed with just bass and drums.
