The material on this album was debuted at the 2010 Vossa Jazz Festival as a result of a festival commission. I saw the performance and was very impressed; in a festival that was not short of fine performances, this was set that stood out and for me was the hit of the festival. So I was both keen and a little apprehensive approaching this CD, as sometimes the magic that is created live cannot be bottled in the studio. Not the case here; the performances are as convincing and affecting as the live performance. There is something of the little-girl-lost quality to Huke's approach to ballads, yet she is able to cut through the band on its more declamatory moments and throughout she emerges as a natural foil for Brunborg's strong sax statements. The tonal quality of the band is mediated by Vågan's guitar whose subtle promptings add much to the success of this album.
