This third release on ACT sees a welcome return to the recording studio for guitar ace and singer Torsten Goods. Since his previous release, 1980 (from 2008), Goods has been performing with the German HR and SWR radio big bands and playing R&B with the likes of Narada Michael Walden and Sarah Connor among other things, so he’s hardly been twiddling his thumbs. The 14-track Love Comes To Town divides neatly into seven self-penned originals (songs and instrumentals), plus seven distinctly varied covers. The latter include a fabulously pumped up version of U2’s ‘When Love Comes To Town’, a terrific reworking of Richard Marx’s ‘Right Here Waiting’, and a very tasty ‘Put It Where You Want It’, Joe Sample’s Crusaders hit. A paean to life’s simple pleasures, ‘Freedom Every Day’ features one of several great Benson-like guitar-scats, while two standout instrumentals co-composed with pianist Jan Miserre, ‘Weekend At The A-Trane’ and ‘Berlin P.M.’, showcase an especially fine writing partnership.
