An intriguing second album as leader from the Swiss-based guitarist Reuter. The 10 pieces here – sometimes limpid and shimmering, often jittery and aggressive – are free-ish yet accessible explorations of tone, texture, rhythm and interplay.
The angular, and rhythmically agitated opener ‘Same Song’ sets the scene for what’s to follow, the frontline trio engaged in relentless attack (with ‘#9Low/High 1’ perhaps the exception).
There’s much to enjoy on Quintet Music, and much that is novel: a guitar-vibes-sax frontline is quite rare in jazz, and the Raghavan/Sorey rhythm section (which is given some significantly challenging work to do) is rock solid and often jaw-droppingly good. If there’s a minor criticism, it’s that while the quintet never rests on its laurels and powers ahead with an energy that’s wholly admirable, the mood is a tad one-paced. A little more variety, some additional light and shade would have elevated this to a four-star project.
