Watts, now in his 80th year, and Weston, a mere 67, both count as veterans of the British free-jazz scene, and it's good to hear them in fine creative form on this live set from Cafe OTO. I'm less familiar with the work of Blunt and Marshall, but they are fully involved as equal contributors to these improvisations and use mainly so-called “legitimate” playing, as indeed do Watts and Weston – no freak notes or under-thelid techniques for them. The excerpts presented here are numbered ‘Dialogues With Strings 2’, ‘DWS 3’ and ‘DWS 5’, presumably reflecting the order of performance and ‘5’, the more energetic 28-minute finale (?), sees the violin and cello take more of a back seat to the saxophone and piano. The work of the leader is, I suppose, less iconoclastic than when he appeared on the scene over 50 years ago, but thankfully there seems to be no let-up in his inventive powers.
