For those who thought that Detroit label/collective Tribe, a jewel in the crown of independent jazz, wound down in the late 1970s then think again. This overview of its 1990s and millennial output shows that many musicians who made it a force to be reckoned with in the age of hi-fi were still going strong in the advent of wi-fi. Original warriors Phil Ranelin, Harold McKinney and Wendell Harrison sound spirited on material that spans post-bop flurries, modal grooves, Afro-centric chants, gospel themes and blues balladry. But the trump card is the socially conscious, politically charged poetry of Mbiyu Chui, whose words of wisdom on ‘Ode To Black Mothers’ and ‘Marcus Garvey’ are welcome in this era of empty celebrities and mercenary dignitaries.
