This new 10-track album from the New Orleans multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Trombone Shorty is his first in five years, the follow-up to his 2017 Blue Note debut Parking Lot Symphony. A recent Grammy-winner for his work as songwriter and featured artist on Jon Batiste’s Album of the Year, We Are, Shorty’s stated intent when making Lifted was to try and capture the excitement and adrenalin rush of his live shows.
Recorded at his own Buckjump Studio with producer Chris Seefried, Shorty delivers powerfully, from the monumental groove of album opener ‘Come Back’ to the multi-layered soulfulness of ‘Good Company’. Special guests include guitarist Gary Clark Jr., who contributes an explosive solo on the energising ‘I'm Standing Here’, two-time Grammy-winning vocalist Lauren Daigle on the radio friendly ‘What It Takes’, and Shorty’s New Orleans compadres New Breed Brass Band who light up ‘Everybody in the World’ with an unalloyed outpouring of joy. Best of all is the rollicking title track which packs in power guitar riffs, a stunning vocal arrangement plus the tightest horn section.
Shorty dedicates the album to his mother, Lois Nelson Andrews, who passed away last year – and the touching album cover features a picture of her holding a young Shorty up at a second line.
