Warsaw Conjunction is an of-the-moment collaboration between Polish bassist Wojtek Mazolewski, and Londoners Tamar Osborn on flute and saxophone and Nacyet Wakili (a.k.a. Edward Wakili-Hick) on drums. The album is energetic, with Wakili bringing an intensity to tracks like ‘Air, Water, Fire’ and ‘To Klub Spatif’, reminiscent of his work with Sons of Kemet. Mazolewski’s bass playing is suitably punchy, heavy on the funk with occasional hints of Tim Commerford.
The album isn’t all just groove however. In ‘the uncertainty principle’, the trio hangs midway between freeness and time, beginning at a slow meander before falling into a fast-paced, heady charge led by Mazolewski. ‘Let’s go’, on the other hand, is fully free, a tide of noise filled with menacingly-bowed bass harmonics and effects-soaked baritone. Osborn’s diffusive use of effects adds an extra cosmic layer, shifting the collective sound from jazz towards psychedelia.
