Anyone who knows Ulf Wakenius's work from his playing in Oscar Peterson's latterday quartet will recall his combative jousting with OP, NHØP and Martin Drew. This beautifully measured homage to Paul McCartney could not be more different. It is reflective and brilliantly interactive chamber jazz. Even an uptempo ‘Eleanor Rigby’ somehow maintains a degree of introspection despite some dazzlingly nimble playing from Wakenius. The opening title track sets the tone with minimal brushwork from Öström and the lightest of basslines from Danielsson.
All three musicians share in the aesthetic of this album, counterbalancing one another's contributions to perfection, and nowhere better than on ‘Blackbird’ where Danielsson's arco cello and a delicate pizzicato solo blend seamlessly into the guitar tour-de-force that follows. It's also thought through as an album in the best traditions of producer Siggi Loch. So, for example a three-note phrase in the intro to ‘You Never Give Me Your Money’ picks up from the opening statement in ‘Taste of Honey’ itself. A concept album? Yes, to be sure, but a concept beautifully realised by three kindred spirits.
