A well-considered little gem from the Lamplight Social label based in Leeds, run by saxophonist James Mainwaring, best known for his work with the Mercury-nominated Roller Trio. It is the second recording from the Hungarian bass player Zoltan Dekany and German guitarist Ulrich Elbracht, formerly faculty members at Leeds College of Music.
This all-acoustic duo perform original compositions, six by Elbracht, five by Dekany, that seem consciously (or unconsciously) suited to reveal their strengths (some pieces had been written with larger ensembles in mind). This is low-key and unhurried, their melodically based lyricism changes hands to best serve the needs of the overall performances rather than a rote exchange of solos in the manner of “you take 32 bars, I’ll take 32 bars and back to theme and out” stuff.
It all goes to prove that jazz need not always be a gratuitous display of virtuosity and can equally accommodate chamber group concepts, if only more people would try it.
