Definitely an album of two halves, this begins with a 22½ minute sextet adaptation of the Gershwin opus. This is a near-success and, while not as overblown as Tommy Smith’s version, it has some intelligent choices as to where to add improv (plus a couple that don’t really work). As well as proving the qualities of the six instrumentalists, this clearly says something about the composer’s gift. The rest, however, is popular Gershwin standards, extremely varied as to Caine’s creative approaches, from a straightforward solo track to slightly avant-garde gestures that seem unsuitable to the material – a short ‘I Got Rhythm’ almost works. Five of these vignettes employ the lyrics, a couple of the more acceptable ones coming off as good examples of singers from non-jazz backgrounds surviving with jazz-oriented backing. But the limp ‘Let’s Call The Whole Thing Off’ sounds like Radio 2 on a wet Friday, and not as well performed as they would demand.
