Crims fans not overwhelmed by the current slew of concert releases from the reconstituted band may be curious about Vantomme's keys-driven project, and not just because of Levin's presence. Vantomme's fellow Belgian Delville seems to have swallowed whole Fripp's sense of dynamics, using lashings of feedback and distortion to layer over Levin's typically irresistible stick lines: for good measure, Lenssens has much of Mastelloto's urgent precision. It all comes together rather handsomely on the driving vamp of ‘Double Down’, while ‘Equal Minds’ has an admirably arch ostentation about it. Clearly coming from a strong Euro-rock sensibility, Vantomme is splendidly unabashed about pumping out great swoops of synth lines that echo and resonate ominously. Vegir may not readily fit a ‘jazz’ definition, but hellfire, what does? And when you have cosmonautic space themes like ‘Sizzurp’ to fizz round your room with, who cares?
