Is it too fanciful to suggest that Cafe Oto is the new Village Vanguard? Just as, from the late 1950s onwards, over 30 albums have been released containing the words …at the Village Vanguard, in the title, so today it seems not a month goes by without someone issuing a recording made at East London's leading venue for experimental music. Certainly, since opening in 2008, Oto has come to occupy a crucial role for the capital's improv community, providing not just a regular performance space, but something approaching a spiritual home. This 3CD set is essentially an homage to Oto, featuring three different bands – the core trio of Parker, Prévost and Edwards, then two quartets with first Schlippenbach and then Thewes – recorded during a three-night residency there. Prévost, of course, built his reputation as an uncompromising percussion technician, exploring timbres and textures with AMM and largely rejecting timekeeping in favour of bowed gongs and cymbals. So it's all the more surprising to hear him here playing a conventional kit and reminding us what an accomplished free-jazz drummer he is – racing out of the gates with an implied swing in his ride cymbal, rallying snare cracks, and even an extended exploration of the hi-hat straight out of Max Roach's book. It's enough to set a level of energy that the rest of the musicians seem happy to plug into – with even Parker's muttering grumble showing a little joie de vivre from time to time. An accompanying DVD of selections from all three nights reveals just how intimate a venue Cafe Oto's darkened space is – the kind of place where risks like this can happily be taken.
