There are some memorable moments on this double CD anthology of duo collaborations past and present from the ACT label. The oldest collaboration represented on this collection, ‘Visa Fran Utanmyra’ by pianist Jan Johansson and bassist George Riedel, comes from the ACT album In Hamburg and was recorded in May 1965, three years after his seminal version for the album Jazz par Svenska. The original version is at metronome marking crotchet 104; this latest version is slower – in places. Beginning at around crotchet 100 it then slows down, which could be a fault in the mastertape with a slight change in tonality. Then, back at around 104, Johansson reaches the improvised section and interestingly indulges in a little bitonality, which he did not on the original recording, before recapitulating of the melody. The accomplished Viktoria Tolstoy performs a convincing version of ‘Red Rain’ while Bugge Weseltoft demonstrates what a superb accompanist he is, first with violinist Henning Kraggerud on ‘Improvisation Over La Folia’ and then with master vocalist Sidsel Endresen on ‘Nightsong’. The accomplished veteran saxophonist Heinz Sauer works well with Joachim Kühn on ‘Lover Man’, the latter revealing his depth of knowledge and a love of beautiful standards he tends to keep to himself. In truth, there is no real highspot in this collection of exemplary performances that illustrate the heights this very basic of all collaborative formats in jazz can reach.
