A Gilles Peterson radio session at the BBC's Maida Vale studio went past its broadcast remit in 2018, as a packed London guest-list joined keyboardist Joe-Armon Jones' band, and frequently soared.
That year's compilation We Out Here, scored more for personnel than content, not always living up to the scene flagship status suggested by the festival of the same name. MV4 catches much hotter energy on the fly, with diverse personnel ranging from Swedish grime singer Fatima to Hak Baker's self-defined G-folk (splicing grime and acoustic guitar). Oscar Jerome's neo-soul vocals have a jazzy slur, aided by his own hard chops of guitar. Poet Asheber references Grenfell on the title track of Armon-Jones' album Starting Today, “creating the fire that will burn illusions”, causing ‘memories’ to be “reborn”. Armon-Jones' keyboard glistens like soft rain on ‘Only’, is part of a steamy Afro-Latin storm on ‘Hold’, and solos with bluesy warmth on ‘Almost Went Too Far’, its sometimes frenetic fire deployed to loving effect. Best is the Ishmael Collective's double-header, Cunningham's breathy sax expanding till the studio seems a gaseous, spiritual flotation tank on ‘The Chapel’, before a keyboard groove burrows through ‘The Tunnels’. Quite different from everything around them, these tracks crown a diverse and limber day's work.
