We might know him as a jazz musician, but Sergey Kuryokhin, who died in 1996, was known in Russia for wearing other hats: film score composer, performance artist, actor. To mark the 20th anniversary of his death, Alexei Aigui set about rescuing some of his music, largely, due to the absence of printed scores, by transcribing them from films. To perform them, Aigui was joined onstage by musicians from Kuryokhin's Pop Mechanics among others. To judge from the liner notes, it seemed to Aigui a momentous occasion and the DVD of the performance, included here, captures some of that sense of occasion. Clearly I'm missing something, as to me the music itself sounds bombastic, like a West End version of rock in which – horror of horrors – audience clap-alongs might be encouraged. Still, these respectful renderings will be welcomed by Kuryokhinophiles, and their release on Leo, the label that released the earliest recordings by Kuryokhin to be smuggled out of the Soviet Union, is highly appropriate.
