This two-CD set coincides with the publication of a book of the same name by Loch: a largely photographic autobiography by the label boss of ACT records. This personal compilation begins with Sidney Bechet's ‘Summertime’, the Blue Note classic that effectively bankrolled BN in its early years. Bechet marks the precise intersection between Loch's life and jazz – gatecrashing a concert by Bechet in Hanover in 1956 he got bitten by the jazz bug which subsequently shaped his life. The first record he produced was the German tenor saxophonist Klaus Doldinger's Jazz Made in Germany, represented here by ‘Recado Bossa Nova’. His career is then traversed, like stepping stones, initially through his favourite or memorable productions for Phillips, Liberty and Warner including those by George Gruntz, Attila Zoller, Volker Kriegel, Johnny Griffin, Gerry Mulligan/Dave Brubeck, the Spencer Davis group and the 1965 American Blues festival at Hamburg. The second CD continues the theme of Loch's favourite and memorable productions for his own ACT label. Included are superlative performances by Jasper Van't Hof, Jorge Pardo, Esbjörn Svensson Trio, Heinz Sauer and Michael Wollny, Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine and a host of others. It provides an attractive counterpoint to Loch's autobiography, as well as shining a spotlight on some valuable, but overlooked tracks.
