We start on familiar ground, with the sophisticated Afro-Cuban hustle of Roberto Fonseca's ‘Cubano Chant’. Naturally, Jazzwise's sister publication Songlines soon ventures far from Jazz Central in this annual CD sampling its Awards nominees. And yet, this magazine dedicated to a global music perspective proves everything's connected. Fanfare Ciocarlia's bustling Balkan brass follows naturally from Fonseca. Nativist tendencies are defeated elsewhere by South African Derek Gripper's virtuoso conversion of Malian kora duets to solo guitar; and by the loping funk bass and dub philosophy of Thailand's Paradise Bangkok Molam International Band, who abut the spring-loaded blues groove of Mauritania's Noura Mint Seymali. Cultural rescue and succour inform the Musicians of the Calais Jungle, Khmer Rouge survivor Rab Ban, and Damon Albarn-reassembled Orchestra of Syrian Musicians. Trinidadian Calypso Rose's tart dismissal of younger rivals and Iranian Mahsa Vahdat's echoing a cappella solo (illegal for women in her native country) trade degrees of defiance, as borders blur.
