This 75-minute compilation from a single 1960 late-night concert finds the busy Copenhagen scene paying tribute to one of its expat residents, bassist Oscar Pettiford, whose premature death occurred a mere three weeks before.
The highlights are two short sets of four tunes each, both with Bengt Hallberg’s trio and featuring respectively Alice Babs and Stan Getz; the latter is in his own expat role and ends the concert with a ballad version of ‘Without A Song’. Babs is impressively loose on standard material, especially when joined by Svend Asmussen (there’s a rather strange edit in the middle of his brief contribution, possibly the result of a tape running out).
Some of the other names were still near the start of their careers, while the more senior Erik Moseholm (later an important broadcaster and educator) is less exciting than one would hope. Oddly, despite five of Pettiford’s memorable originals in the programme including ‘Bohemia After Dark’ and ‘Blues In The Closet’, there’s no sign of the well-known ‘Laverne Walk’ (a favourite of Ron Carter) or the more famous ‘Tricotism’. Steeplechase producer Nils Winther, then just 16 years old, actually attended the concert and so the rediscovered tapes clearly have fond memories, but the end result is rather mixed.
