And so we have another round up of South African jazz, with the reissued likes of ‘Soweto’ by the great pianist and Zen master Abdullah Ibrahim and the velvet-brass nostalgia of the African Jazz Pioneers’ ‘Yeka Yeka’ – so sumptuous and inviting you want to dive in head first – cheek by jowl with hip young gunslinger/pianist Bokani Dyer, an EFG London Jazz Festival favourite and Glasper-a-like whose funky ‘Vuvuzela’ merges that ubiquitous stadium horn with the jutting sounds of a post-modern Cape Town. All the styles of mid-20th century urban South Africa are here, from marabi and kwela to jive and – in the shape of Thandiswa, arguably South Africa's finest female singer – a straightahead ballad from her mega-selling 2006 album, Zabalaza. Greats abound: Dolly Rathebe, flying and swinging; Afro-jazz outfit Batsumi, all slinky riffs and psychedelic sax, and the hugely talented (and tragically underrated during his lifetime) Kippie Moeketsi, gifting us the jiving, groove-laden ‘Clarinet Kwela’, now a music classroom staple. Important tracks from one of the jazziest countries in the world, even if the selections and running order feel a bit randomly cobbled together.
