This is Pohjola's third album for the Edition label, and each release has continued to reveal signs of artistic growth that add to his growing stature as an artist. This is his most challenging project yet, a duo recording with a percussionist, which is rather akin to walking across the Niagara Falls on a tightrope. One false move and the show is over. Pohjola rises to the challenge, evoking a less-is-more ethic underlined by thoughtful melodicism. The album is taken from the soundtrack of Animal Image, a new film by Perttu Saksa where Pohjola provides the aural correlation to writer and photographer Heikki Willamo's expedition into Finland's tundra regions in search of images that capture the essence of an animal in the wild. Echo and haunting electronics frame Pohjola's trumpet which is neatly counterpointed by the subtle and pointillist percussion of Kallio, whose dynamics frame mood and direction of each piece. It's music that functions as both moody background or alluring and lyrical foregrounded sound. A great addition to the Edition catalogue.
