After a series of albums that seemed more like search parties looking for a direction to follow, Verneri Pohjola finally returns to the format that saw him emerge as the youthful rising star of Finnish jazz back in 2003-6 with the Ilmiliekki Quartet – trumpet, piano, bass and drums.
This album brings together two-thirds of that group – Pohjola, Prättälä and Lötjönen – and on the evidence of this album, they once again show the kind of promise that was never fulfilled last time round. Let's hope they stick at it; too often in the past Pohjola has flattered to deceive, in other words, appeared promising ultimately to disappoint. While this is not the last chance saloon, he should really grasp the opportunity to develop this group.
It was, and now is, the best context for his playing, broadened since the Ilmillieki days by Prättälä's use of subtle electronics and while Paatelainen on pedal steel and Lyytinen on saxes broaden the sonic palette, they are not really integral to the core quartet.
It's the easy interplay they developed first time around that seems to be where the future might be realised for this enigmatic trumpeter.
