Vinicius Cantuária is a titan of Brazilian music, and one of its most maverick. A move to New York in 1990 widened his sonic horizons, brought him into collaborative contact with such redoubtable experimentalists as Brian Eno, Marc Ribot and his homeboy Arto Lindsay. That Cantuária hasn't yet released a single dud record is testament to his determination to keep things elegant and minimal while exploring things adventurous and eclectic. Indio de Apartamento has shades of the recent Lagrimas Mexicanas, his long-gestated duet with the American guitarist and composer Bill Frisell; there's the same quiet beauty, the same understated grace. Frisell is here on guitar on the languid ‘Pe Na Estrada’; Ryuchi Sakamoto plays piano on the brief but compelling title track. Cantuária drapes his effortless tenor over the album in ways soothing and reassuring, a buffer against the raw instrumentation and computer generated backing. ‘Purus’ – on which Cantuária simultaneously delivers vocals, guitar, keyboard loops at the same time – is a downtempo triumph, for which we'll forgive ‘This Time’, a saccharin English language effort with Jesse Harris, longtime collaborator with Norah Jones, here on piano on ‘Quem Sou Eu’.
