Trumpeter Roland Ramanan (son of the late Shake Keane, trumpeter on Joe Hariott’s most groundbreaking early free-jazz sessions) came up through London’s improv scene, largely playing free music. Here, teamed up with Spanish drummer Javier Carmona and Italian guitarist Roberto Sassi, he takes a turn towards more structured contexts. Sassi’s chopped and jerky guitar riffs form the backbone, provoking angrily angular bursts of energy on tracks like ‘No Knees’ and ‘Slow Burn’, which sound like a cross between Beefheart and prog-punk outsiders The Cardiacs, with a heavy nod to the 1990s New York ‘downtown’ scene. Still, improvisation is the main ingredient, with the trio dropping into loose and unhurried interludes of delicate group interplay, as though catching their breath for the next collective outburst. Pieces like ‘Voiced Unvoiced’ and ‘Improctober’ take this even further, providing opportunities to patiently investigate lingering timbral landscapes. It’s not easy to pogo while stroking your chin, but this might just be the music to attempt it to.
