This group, comprising Henriksen and Westerhus from Norway, and Dumoulin and Verbruggen from Belgium, are captured live on Amsterdam's famed Bimhuis stage in the summer of 2016 in the same week the quartet played a critically acclaimed concert at the Moers Festival. It's a fascinating collaboration between four European musicians who have successfully incorporated electronics into their musical vision in interesting and varied ways.
Thus nothing is forced or sounds artificially aligned – all four musicians respond in the moment to shape the evolution of each performance. The recording is barely 40 minutes long, but the intensity of detail takes far longer to unravel as the conversational approach of Henriksen is confronted by the ‘let's-get-to the point' insistence of Verbruggen and Dumoulin, a creative duality that serves this music well. In a collision of the cerebral and the visceral where subdued introspection is confronted with post-industrial noise, success depends in managing the space in-between to allow room for opposites to attract, a delicate balancing act that this ensemble manage to pull off.
