Without the presence of Wes, The Montgomery Brothers could have been seen as a crossbreed that included basic elements of George Shearing and the King Cole Trio (sans vocals). As such they weren’t without a certain charm and an all-important ability to swing. Yet the fact that Wes was present greatly raised the Brothers’ appeal and proved the clincher. But then from The Mills Brothers by way of Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey, then Hank, Thad and Elvin Jones, The Heath Brothers, Cannonball and Nat Adderley and, ultimately, The Jackson Five, the public at large has shown a constant interest in family acts. As with the truly great improvisers, Wes never appeared rushed no matter what the tempo. He just seemed to glide effortlessly, whether it be on his own compositions (‘D-Natural Blues’, ‘Finger Pickin’’, ‘Doujie’) some carefully selected jazz standards (‘Jeanine’, ‘Groove Yard’, ‘Barbados’), a bunch of Buddy Montgomery originals plus one, ‘Bock To Bock’, he co-wrote with Wes. Trying to avoid mirroring Milt Jackson when switching from boppish piano to vibraphone, Brother Buddy makes an acceptable second voice. But as to be expected, it’s Wes who always makes the running throughout. Finally, half-a-dozen selections recorded on location at Jorgies Jazz Club in St. Louis condense the Brothers’ collective strengths and make a welcome addition to this 3CD collection.
