Over the last few years Resonance has performed remarkable acts of musical archaeology, in particular researching and issuing material by Bill Evans and Larry Young, but also six albums of previously unissued Wes Montgomery, mainly from his early years. This anthology is drawn from five of these Whereas the Evans and Young material is mainly in very high sound quality, this is not true of the Montgomery sets, so that some really fine instrumental performances are not always matched by the technical resources of the recordings. That said, there are some excellent musical moments from jams in his hometown of Indianapolis, but the star turn is the set with the Wynton Kelly trio from Seattle, that has some really excellent support from Kelly, McClure and Cobb. It's better recorded than the rest, too. If you have later Montgomery in your collection and want a sampler of his early work then this album does the trick, though if you're a completest you'll want the full albums. Overall, though, I'd suggest forgoing the early years and just getting the full 1966 Smokin' In Seattle set.
