Recently heard in London with US guitar star Kurt Rosenwinkel, Will Vinson is one of those unsung British heroes who try their luck in New York. Not all succeed, but this tall, slim alto-saxman has made a significant impression in what is still the toughest jazz town on the planet. And as Sinatra said, if you can make it there you’ll make it anywhere. The local standard is high and if you doubt that, just listen to Marcus Gilmore’s solo introduction to ‘Swagger’, one of several corking originals in this live Manhattan set. Vinson was a good player before he crossed the pond but there’s now an extra overlay of confidence and fluidity about his work. Just when you think one of his ideas has run dry, he finds another and an even more ingenious twist to finish it. Beside him guitarist Lund and pianist Parks take short but condensed solos, which deliver similarly hip lines without outstaying their welcome. The originals are works in progress but on a standard like ‘Stablemates’ everyone kicks in with a group cohesion strong enough to survive moments of reflective silence. An impressive effort by our Mr Vinson in the land of fast company.
