Guitarist Muthspiel's career is one marked by steady competence and good taste. Not one to shout his name from the rooftops, there are no grand gestures in his playing, such as here, where he presents himself as a singer/songwriter, mixing and matching his talent with musicians from five different countries during a world tour in 2014. All enter the spirit of things with varying degrees of success. What is fascinating are the individual flavours – Muthspiel calls them musical dialects – reflecting nationality that colour these collaborations, from a so-so folky duo with singer Becca Stevens (‘And Then’), which becomes a bluesy trio with the addition of Billy Childs on piano, (‘Angel Envy’ and ‘Travelling On’) in New York; a successful Brazilian collaboration in Rio de Janerio (‘Manhattan’, ‘No Blues’ and ‘From Day to Day’) to the sound of the tango (an Argentinian preoccupation) from his Buenos Aires collaboration (‘The Dancer’). The Swedish ensemble – a group with Muthspiel, cello, bass and drums – have a quirky, groovy minimalism, while the tracks recorded in his hometown of Vienna with violin and cello are redolent of that city's enormous classical heritage that are not really jazz (like much of this whole album) but as Muthspiel says, does it really matter?
