If rhythm is the foundation, then here's a group that was built from the ground up. Take a couple of experienced percussionists (Gordon and Dawes), add a seasoned improv drummer (May) and a weighty double-bass player (Marsh) plus a smattering of lo-fi electronics and you've got an extremely basic template for a group – but one that's able to work heavy magic nonetheless. Unsurprisingly, the urge to groove is strong and, more than once, Marsh channels the ghost of Ronnie Boykins, plugging into some of Sun Ra's deepest moods: ‘Naked Eye’ could be a lost sister to ‘Angels And Demons At Play’ and ‘Point Noir’ sounds like a stroll in the ‘Exotic Forest’. Even on the tracks where the bass takes more of a back seat, there's a seething intensity with dense hand percussion, shakers and rattles suggesting some kind of voodoo ceremony in a sweltering jungle. There's some inspired guest appearances, too: Ben Cowen of dub-meets-krautrock outfit, Snorkel, adds gritty keys and electronics; Julie Kjaer supplies rough, splintered sax honks; and, on ‘So Black Dada,’ homegrown free-jazz hero, Alan Wilkinson, smoothes a clanking, ramshackle rhythm with laconic alto phrases. Stunning in its simplicity, it's an album that reveals new depths with each fresh listen.
