Gordon is something of a phenomenon among present-day trombonists, as adept at replicating Tricky Sam Nanton's shouts and howls as he in emulating JJ Johnson for speed and fluency. His recordings cover the gamut of black music, from gospel to Wynton's sharp-edged sextets through to quirky duos and outings like this one.

For good or ill, Wycliffe has chosen this line-up of ‘young New Yorkers’ to pay tribute to New Orleans via their readings of familiar pieces, that's everything from ‘When The Saints’ to ‘Tiger Rag’ and on to ‘Down By The Riverside’ etc – 15 tracks in all. Felder plays parade style drums and the virtuosic Ruhumbika adds his fluent tuba line, while Wycliffe chortles and guffaws, with Kelso adding class in Louis-oriented fashion. The Australian Cunningham is neat and to the point while Dease, when he plays tenor-saxophone sounds suitably antique. The overall outcome is cheerful and spirited, in much the same way that present-day Crescent City music often is. The question that arises is quite why Gordon chose to go down this well-worn path.
