Jazz breaking news: Guy Barker to receive BASCA Gold Badge Award

The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) celebrates 40 years of recognising outstanding contributors to the UK music industry with the 40th anniversary Gold Badge Awards on Wednesday 16 October at The Savoy Hotel in London’s Strand, sponsored by the Performing Rights Society for Music.

Genre-hopping virtuoso pianist Joanna MacGregor (pictured) is at the heart of a new audiovisual touring project exploring graphic scores – whereby graphic artworks, comic strips and abstract contemporary art replaces standard notation – early pioneers of which include the likes of György Ligeti and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and latterly such experimental composers such as Earle Brown, John Cage and Brian Eno.

Jazz breaking news: Mike Westbrook bites back with The Serpent Hit

Composer, pianist and arranger Mike Westbrook and vocalist and lyricist Kate Westbrook (pictured left) are bringing their latest work, The Serpent Hit – a harrowing glimpse into the future – to Wilton’s Music Hall, in London’s borough of Tower Hamlets, on 1 October, as they launch the album of the same name and celebrate 40 years of working together.
