Jazz breaking news: BBC Big Band get Fairfield Halls swinging at 50

Currently celebrating their 50th anniversary as a major music venue, the Fairfield Halls, Croydon, last Friday played host to BBC Radio 3’s Jazz Line-Up and Radio 2’s Big Band Special with a special concert featuring the BBC Big Band performing music associated with the many great big bands that have appeared there in the past half-century, ranging from Harry James, Duke Ellington and Woody Herman to Buddy Rich and Maynard Ferguson.

Acclaimed London-based Mancunian clarinettist Arun Gosh has composed a contemporary-edged soundtrack to The Adventures of Prince Achmed a film directed by Lotte Reiniger in 1926, its the oldest surviving feature-length animation in cinema history.

Jazz breaking news: Wayne Shorter back on Blue Note Without A Net

Following Jazzwise’s exclusive announcement in its June issue that iconic saxophonist Wayne Shorter (pictured left), had re-signed to Blue Note after a 43-year gap, the label have confirmed his new album, entitled Without A Net, will be released on 5 February 2013.
